Pre - k to Middle School

At Expert Tutoring we provide individual and group tutoring from kindergarten through high school in all academic subjects. We also offer preparation for the standardized tests listed below.

The vast majority of private high schools in America are selective, meaning they have many more people applying for admission than they have available slots. Moreover, the great inconsistency in curriculum between the thousands of public and private elementary and middle schools only complicates the admission decision process. When comparing students from various private and public middle schools, high school admission officers cannot judge students’ aptitudes and abilities solely on their GPA. For this reason, many private high schools require applicants to take an entrance examination in order to identify academic ability. While the entrance examination score is not the only thing admissions officers use to evaluate applicants, it is the strongest determining factor.

most common standardized exams:

ISEE

Independent School Entrance Exam.  The ISEE is the most advanced admission test available for independent schools. This examination has three levels: a Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level.  The Lower Level is for students currently in grades 4 and 5 who are candidates for admission to grades 5 and 6. The Middle Level is for students in grades 6 and 7 who are candidates for grades 7 and 8.  The Upper Level is for students in grades 8 through 11 who are candidates for grades 9 through 12. At all levels, the ISEE consists of three parts: a carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning test that measures the student's capability for learning; a reading comprehension and mathematics achievement test that provides specific information about the student's strengths and weaknesses in those areas;and a timed written response to a prompt.

SSAT

Secondary School Admission Test.  The SSAT is given nationally several times a year, or students may make individual arrangements to take it on other dates.  The test requires the writing of an essay, and the rest of the test is multiple choice. Scores depend only on the answers to the multiple choice questions; the results of the essay are sent to prospective schools to be evaluated.

COOP
  • The Cooperative Entrance Examination (COOP) is one of the two most widely used entrance exams for Catholic high schools.  It is a multiple-choice exam designed to determine academic aptitude and skills achievement through eighthgrade.  The COOP tests understanding of language, reading, andmathematics, as well as memory or reasoning skills.  The COOP is administered once each year, during either October or November.  Students must pre-register, either through their parochial elementary school, or if currently enrolled in public school, as directed on the application form obtained from any parochial school.  Generally the exam is taken at the student's first-choice high school.  Raw scores for each test section are determined by crediting one point for each question answered correctly. The scores are then compared to those of other students taking the exam and are reported as percentiles

Testimonials

"I would not be where I am today without the help of Expert Tutoring. Throughout my high school career, my tutors helped me every step of the way. From writing last-minute essays to SAT tutoring, I always knew who to call to help me get the job done. Over the past four years, Expert Tutoring became my second home and the staff became family. My tutors were my support group. They stuck by me on my lows (even when I gave them a hard time with doing my SAT prep work) and celebrated with my on my successes. Most importantly, Expert Tutoring did not just guide me through high school, it taught me many skills and tricks to help me succeed on my own."

Testimonials

"I was a tutoring and college counseling client of Expert Tutoring from 2008-2011 during my time in high school, and my family and I couldn’t be happier with my experience!   They are pros at what they do and created a custom tutoring and college selection plan for me tailored to my academic achievements and personal interests.  They even guided me through my decision to transfer from a parochial high school to a public high school and helped to make it a smooth transition.  I am now an honors graduate of New York University, and work in Shanghai / Hong Kong as -- guess what -- a boarding school / university admissions consultant!  Who knew that my top-tier experience at Expert would turn me on to a future career.  No one is better!"
